THURSDAY NIGHT LIVE!

AUGUST 31 – SWEET ADELINES CHORUS AND ICE CREAM SOCIAL

The west Courthouse lawn will once again be alive with the sound of music on the last Thursday evening of August. The entertainment for Thursday, August 31 will be the Sweet Adelines - West Michigan Chorus from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets to downtown Mason for a wonderful free concert, courtesy of our sponsors. The Mason First United Methodist Church will be holding an ice cream social then as well. In case of rain, both parts of the event will be moved to that church, just east of Courthouse square.

The musical entertainment series concludes with the Mason High School Band on Thursday, September 28 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., led by Beth Bousfield, MHS Band Director. The Mason High School Cheer Squad will join the Band for the September program. Concert sponsorships are still available for August and September.

Robin King of Independent Bank, chair of the Mason Area Chamber of Commerce committee hosting the concerts, requests that "ideas and sponsors are needed for continuing the concerts in 2007." While she is happy that all of last years performers returned for encore performances this year, she welcomes the prospect of adding more variety and possibly more concerts. People may contact the Chamber office to assist with the 2007 concert series planning.

CHAMBER VOLUNTEERS VALUED AND NEEDED

Volunteers are a driving force behind all that the Chamber accomplishes each year. From coordinating networking events to overseeing the Chamber’s economic development efforts, volunteers provide the critical resources needed to help the Chamber serve its members. Right now, we’re in need of several people to help with our upcoming events. Call the Chamber office right away to sign up!

RIBBON CUTTINGS AND OPEN HOUSES ADD VALUE

Mason area businesses have an easy way to let the entire community find out more about their business or organization by holding a ribbon cutting. The Mason Area Chamber of Commerce’s Ambassadors Committee creates value by hosting these events at no charge to the business or organization.

Ribbon cuttings are available for such business milestones as the grand opening of a new business facility (such as the one held last month at JP Signs & Graphics pictured below), a business anniversary (five-year increments), the relocation or new outlet of an existing business, or the appointment of a new owner or manager of an existing business.

Ribbon cuttings are easy for a business to hold because the Chamber folks bring the big scissors, the ribbon, the camera, and Chamber Ambassadors to be in the picture. The whole event only takes about ten minutes.

The Ingham County Community News has been very generous in publishing ribbon cutting photos and captions as business news items. Managers and owners interested in a ribbon cutting should contact the Chamber office at (517) 676-1046.

Besides promoting ribbon-cuttings for area businesses, the Mason Area Chamber of Commerce encourages its members to consider hosting a "behind the scenes" open house or tour. For members who have facilities or offices that would be of interest to other Chamber members, such events allow the community to have a first hand experience with their business or organization.

The Chamber’s Ambassadors Committee creates value for businesses and organizations in the community by publicizing open houses or tour events in the Chamber’s monthly "Mason in Motion" newsletter. Mailing labels of Chamber members are also available at cost for businesses to use in mailings about their event. A bulk mail stamp is also available to members.

If a business or organization doesn’t have a facility or office that would lend itself to an open house or tour event, the Ambassadors suggest participation in their member mixers. You may also choose to showcase products and services through door prizes or in a Chamber auction event, often held with mixers. Managers and owners may call the Chamber office for more information at (517) 676-1046.

NEW OPTION COMING FOR CHAMBER PARTNERSHIP

Every day you look for ways to foster a healthier workforce while applying the brakes to rising health care costs. Blue Care Network of Michigan, together with the Mason Area Chamber (through our partnership with the Lansing Regional Chamber), has what may well be the answer. It comes in the form of a health care product available October 1, 2006 to most Chamber members. It rewards people for adopting healthy lifestyles while saving employers an average of 10 percent in premiums.

The new product, Healthy Blue Living SM, encourages employees and their spouses to take charge of their health with support from their primary care physicians and BCN. In exchange for lower co-payments and deductibles, people commit to healthy lifestyles. Because participation in Healthy Blue Living is entirely voluntary, members who choose to do nothing will pay higher co-pays and deductibles. For their part, employers that agree to purchase Healthy Blue Living and promote a healthier workplace receive premium savings over current BCN offerings and the potential for lower long-term program costs.

The first health care plan of its type created by the Blues, Healthy Blue Living is designed to reward members who adopt and maintain healthier lifestyles while providing opportunities for improvement to those who don’t. The plan’s foundation is an active, three-way partnership between BCN, providers and customer groups supported by financial incentives, education and support.  Plan subscribers are evaluated against target scores in six aspects of overall health: alcohol use, blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, smoking status, and weight.

After a subscriber’s evaluation with a BCN primary care physician, he or she then receives a score based on health status in the six categories and a clear direction to follow toward healthy improvement in partnership with the physician. Call the Lansing Regional Chamber at 517-487-6340 or e-mail lmeeder@lansingchamber.org to learn more about this exciting new product. Of course, traditional plans are also available. Be sure to tell them you are a Mason Area Chamber of Commerce member!
